Brazil to ttyymmnn: “Foch you!”

In any event, I’m sure some horrible toxic shipbreaker  will enjoy this.

I guess that they want it to become a museum means we might not get to watch a Youtube video of an aircraft carrier getting beached at full speed at a Bangladesh ship breaking yard .

this just sort of underlines how useless aircraft carriers are for most militaries

Also:

While still active, Sao Paulo was the oldest aircraft carrier in the world.

This is false. HMS Hermes/INS Viraat was older (commissioned 1959, and laid down in 1944, while Foch was commisioned in ‘63), and also served until 2017 (retired a month after Brazil gave up on the Sao Paulo).

The real news here is that Brazil still flies the A-4.

This is also interesting:

“ With the Brazilian Navy, however, the vessel had a short and rather troubled career, marked by a number of mechanical problems and accidents. Because of these mishaps, the ship spent more time standing still than sailing. In February 2017, after giving up on upgrading the aircraft carrier, the naval command decided to permanently disable Sao Paulo.”

Joshua Slocum is not surprised .

Take that Greta!

Today’s daydream: buy this and convert it into a private yacht but of course leave the runways, etc. completely intact. Think about all that space. Plus imagine the faces of all the other billionaires in their fancy yachts when you pull up to Monaco in this, with your cars all stored on/in it. You could have a ‘ billionaires only’ auto-x on the top deck! Or ‘who can get to the highest speed and also stop before falling off’ contest. Imagine the possibi lities....

Can’t help you with that, but here are a couple satellite shots of Ark Royal getting torn apart on the beach at Aliaga, Turkey:

(note the R on the back corner of the flight deck identifying it)

Ark Royal’s sister ships Invincible and Illustrious were broken up there in 2011 and 2017 as well, but it doesn’t look like Google Earth caught either of them.

It may be true that they are useless for most militaries , but I’m not sure how Brazil operating carriers for half a century shows that.

No way, CP all day and twice on Sundays.

The Sao Paolo has had two major fires and one complete refit since 2000 , and still needs work on her boilers, engines and cats. It ’s a money pit.

They all look horrible. Here’s Aliaga Turkey:

Alang, India:

Kinja'd!!!

Note that while I’m sure the water there isn’t g ood, the brown isn’t really different from anywhere else along the coast, the blue is from a different image, not an indication of a toxic cloud reaching out into the sea.

Gadani, Pakistan:

Kinja'd!!!

Bhatiari, Bangladesh:

Kinja'd!!!

Of course here in the US, we don’t crash them on the beach, but it’s still not a clean operation. Here’s Brownsville, TX:

Kinja'd!!!

The shipbreaker in Brownsville mostly does Navy ships (the government wants to avoid complaints about poisoning South Asians , etc. and also wants to feed pork to American companies), here you can see two Forrestal and/or Kitty Hawk class supercarriers going under the knife, among the other ships present.

Another take: Brazil bough t it for 12 million, spent 100 million on repairs and upgrades and got 206 days at sea out of it over 17 years (and two major fires) . It appears the classic European aircraft carrier ownership experience is not entirely dissimilar to the classic European car ownership experience.

They could put a whole bunch of Super Tucanos on it, but I think it would still be pretty useless. It is probably cheaper and easier to have a bunch of small airfields along the coast.
